Braces and hygiene: how to lower the risk of spots, cavities, and gum inflammation

Braces trap plaque faster, so a regular brush is often not enough. You need a clear kit and regular follow-up.

Braces and hygiene: how to lower the risk of spots, cavities, and gum inflammation

Braces create extra places where plaque and food collect. That raises the risk of white spots on enamel, cavities around brackets, and gum inflammation, especially if care is irregular.

A basic kit

  • a soft brush or an orthodontic brush;
  • fluoride toothpaste twice a day;
  • interdental brushes and superfloss under the wire;
  • a single-tuft brush around brackets;
  • a water flosser as an extra, not a replacement for brushes.

What to watch

Red gums, blood, a bad odor, chalky white spots near braces, and food catching are reasons to talk about care with your orthodontist or hygienist. If a bracket comes off or a wire cuts the lining, contact the clinic.

How AIOral helps

AIOral can remind you about interdental cleaning and visits. It does not adjust an orthodontic plan and does not replace an orthodontist exam.
