Red flags: when not to wait

Severe pain or swelling

Do not wait if pain is getting worse, keeps you from sleeping, you have facial or gum swelling, or it is hard to open your mouth.

Get help promptly if bleeding will not stop, or if it started after trauma or a tooth extraction.

A loose permanent tooth, trauma, a painful chip, or a knocked-out tooth needs an in-person exam.

Fever, a bad taste, pus, rapidly growing swelling, or feeling unwell can be signs of infection.

If a sore, white patch, or red patch in the mouth lasts about two weeks, the lining of the mouth should be examined.

Tell your dentist about blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, pregnancy, and serious chronic conditions.
