Braces and hygiene: reducing the risk of stains, cavities, and gum inflammation

With braces, plaque builds up faster, so regular brushing often isn't enough. You need a clear set of tools and regular check-ins.

Braces and hygiene: reducing the risk of stains, cavities, and gum inflammation

Braces create extra spots where plaque and food get trapped. That raises the risk of white spots on enamel, cavities near the brackets, and gum inflammation, especially if care isn't regular.

The basic kit

  • a soft brush or an orthodontic brush;
  • fluoride toothpaste twice a day;
  • interdental brushes and superfloss under the wire;
  • a single-tuft brush around the brackets;
  • a water flosser as an add-on, not a replacement for interdental brushes.

What to watch for

Red gums, bleeding, bad breath, white chalky spots near the brackets, and food getting stuck are reasons to talk to your orthodontist or hygienist about your routine. If a bracket comes loose or the wire irritates the mucosa, contact the clinic.

How AiOraly helps

AiOraly can remind you about interdental cleaning and a visit, but it doesn't adjust your orthodontic plan and doesn't replace a checkup with your orthodontist.
