Baby teeth matter for eating, speech, and holding space for permanent teeth. Cavities in baby teeth shouldn't be treated as "not important," so brushing starts as soon as the first tooth appears.
How much toothpaste
- under age 3 — a smear about the size of a grain of rice;
- ages 3 to 6 — a pea-size amount;
- an adult applies the toothpaste and makes sure the child spits out the excess;
- mouthwash usually isn't needed for young children unless it's prescribed.
How to help
Until a child has confident motor skills, an adult brushes together with them: the child tries first, then the adult finishes the job. It's important not to scold mistakes, but to build a short, repeatable ritual morning and evening.
When to see a dentist
Dark spots, white patches near the gumline, pain, refusing to chew, a tooth injury, or frequent sugary drinks are reasons to book a visit. AiOraly does not replace a pediatric dentist.
